Delighted to have my works Rachel Ruysch (New Order), 2015, and Banquet Still Life (after Adriaen van Utrecht, 1644), 2016 shown at Time Travellers, a group video art exhibition presented by Viewmaster Projects.
Time Travellers bridges classical art themes with contemporary time-based media, transforming storefront windows into glowing canvases inspired by the great masters of the 15th to 18th centuries. This exhibition plays with the dynamics of the renowned TEFAF art fair when Maastricht breathes art and welcomes 60,000 art lovers and international collectors. Viewmaster Projects’ time-based media art exhibition in public space is a contemporary addition as well as a contraction to the indoor art fair and its classical, static presentations.
The exhibition explores Vanitas still lifes, the symbolism of flowers, plants, and animals, creating a poetic dialogue between past and present while offering new perspectives on classical art. It also reflects on "the passing of time," with several works focusing on accelerated, delayed, or frozen time. Classical religious themes such as pain, betrayal, and charity are reimagined for today, emphasizing their enduring relevance.
Featuring 12 video works by artists, Time Travellers presents a diverse range of artistic approaches. Set in the historic Wyck District of Maastricht, the free exhibition transforms this area, with buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries, into an open-air museum. After the TEFAF fair and local galleries close, evening projections will illuminate storefront windows, offering passers-by the opportunity to experience contemporary interpretations of classical art.
